MODULE 17: Muslim Type



I.                    Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
a. explain the history of Muslim Dance;
b. discuss the different Muslim Mindanao dance; and
c. value the contributions of the Muslims through appreciating their culture and dances.

II.                  Overview:

        In this topic, it talks about the original Filipino Muslim dance in which its contributions arise to the regional tribes of Mindanao. Mindanao, which is the third major island in the archipelago and its home to the largest cultural minority in the country. The Muslims is host to many of these captivating dances. There dances are famous for loyalty and enchanting beauty.

III.                Learning Content:
Muslim Mindanao Dance

Aside from the colorful contributions of its regional tribes, Mindanao is home to the largest cultural minority in the Philippines, the Muslims. Brought by Javanese and Middle Eastern traders, Islam is the religion of approximately 20 percent of the Philippines population.

Pangalay
Tribe: Badjao
Origin: Zamboanga Del Sur

A pangalay native to badjao, sometimes known as the “sea gypsies”. Pangalay is a dance that emphasizes the agility of the upper body.

Burung talo
Origin: Tausug
A form of self defense, the dance like movements shows a fight between a hawk and a cat.

Asik
Tribe: Maguindanao
Origin: Lanao Del sur
A solo slave dance performed by the umbrella bearing attended to win the favor of her sultan master.


Singkil
Tribe: Maranao
Origin: lanao, Mindanao
Singkil dance take its name from the bells worn on the ankles of Muslim princess. Perhaps one of the oldest of truly Filipino dances, the singkil recounts the epic legend of the “darangan” of the maranao people of Mindanao.

Pangsak
Tribe: Yakan
Origin: Basilan
The yakan are a Muslim ethnic group in the highlands of Mindanao. They wear elaborately woven costumes tightly on their bodies. Both of their faces are dotted with white paint, to hide their identity from evil spirits.

Pangalay ha patong
Tribe: badjao
A royal couple balance perilously on top of bamboo poles imitating the movements of the picturesque southern boat (the vinta)with colorful sails gliding across the sulu sea.

Pangapir
Tribe: maranao
Origin: Lanao Del Sur
Pagaper depicts a royal manner of walking among the maranao people who lives mainly around Lake Lanao. Ladies of the royal court perform this stately dance in preparation for an important event.

Sagayan
Tribe: maguindanao
Origin: cotabato
Performed very fierce warriors carrying a shield elaborately painted with curlicues, rounds, twirl and mirrors which are attached with shell noise makers.

Kapit tendong
A yakan ribbon dance, featuring a tendong attached to a stick. Dancers manipulate these into various shapes that represent the motion of waves, birds, and snake.

Paunjalay
A pre-nuptial dance of the yakan tribe of basilan performed by the bride and groom prior to their wedding ceremony in the langal or church. Both of their faces are dotted with white paint, to hide their identity from the evil spirits

    I'm a student of bachelor of Physical Education po. I just want to ask lang po kung may Literature at Musical notation po kayo ng Kaped Tendong or kapit tendong folk dance. Badly needed po for our finals. Thankyou po 🙂
